Rolling with my Role Model - Karlie Marlatt

I’m excited to share my fascinating conversation with Karlie Marlatt, a really close friend I’ve known since I was three years old. Karlie’s current role as an Admissions Counselor at The Ohio State University-Marion is inspiring, and I was eager to write about her journey!!

1. What were the different types of jobs you did when you were in school and college?

Karlie was a remarkable multitasker during her school years. She juggled a variety of responsibilities, including babysitting, lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, working as an intern for a roofing company, and even holding a position at OSU campus. At The Ohio State University, Karlie conducted campus tours for prospective students and organized various events for the university community.

2. What inspired you to become a lifeguard and what lessons did being a lifeguard teach you?

Karlie's swimming career, which began at the age of four, inspired her to become a lifeguard. She continued swimming through high school and found that her lifeguarding experience naturally led her to teaching children how to swim. Through her work as a lifeguard, Karlie developed essential skills such as assertiveness and the ability to intervene quickly in potentially dangerous situations, such as preventing children from running around the pool deck or rescuing them from drowning.

3. What were the challenges you faced when babysitting?

During her high school years, Karlie struggled to arrive on time for her babysitting jobs due to a lack of personal transportation. However, her situation improved when she began college, as she no longer faced the same challenges. The only difficulties she encountered while babysitting during her college years were related to scheduling conflicts such as going from school to a job.

4. Did you do these same jobs when you were in college or did you have a different job?

Karlie's college career was marked by steady employment, but her junior year brought a significant step forward. While she had worked various jobs, she was offered the unique role of junior counselor. This elevated her from a student worker to a more integral part of the college's staff.

5. How did you use your money that you earned when you were in High School and College?

Her current savings are dedicated to purchasing a future home. During her school years, she diligently saved her earnings to cover her college tuition, which ultimately allowed her to graduate debt-free.

6. How do you manage all these 4 jobs and what time management strategies do you use to balance your work and life?

Her strategy was to maintain a balanced schedule. For example, when Karlie tutored me, we always had a set day of the week. Additionally, whenever she needed to study, she would create a structured plan that included specific times for studying and socializing with friends.

7. As my role model, what advice would you give to me and other young girls in the world who would like to follow your footsteps?

Karlie's message to the world is to prioritize your goals and avoid distractions. She emphasizes the importance of staying focused on your work and avoiding unnecessary breaks, that’ll take you away from your goals.

My conversation with Karlie was a really fun rollercoaster ride. She's a truly special person who has been a constant presence in my life since I was a child. I'm incredibly grateful for her support and the countless hours she's dedicated to my growth.
